It is intended to be taken in conjunction with a lower-calorie diet and more exercise to support weight loss goals. When taking Saxenda or any other medicine, it’s crucial to speak with a healthcare provider for advice and appropriate usage instructions.

What is the duration of a Saxenda pen?

How long your Saxenda pen will last depends on what stage of treatment you’re at.

When you begin taking Saxenda you’ll take a lower dose of Liraglutide (the active ingredient in Saxenda) then you would later in your treatment.

Naturally, this means that one injection pen will last longer at the start of your treatment than it would when you’re taking a larger dose later on.

The dosage plan you will follow will be decided by your prescriber, but you’ll usually increase your dose week on week until you reach the highest possible daily dose of 3mg of Liraglutide a day by your 5th week.

You’ll usually go through the following dose schedule:

• Week 1 – 0.6mg a day
• Week 2 – 1.2mg a day
• Week 3 – 1.8mg a day

• Week 4 – 2.4mg
• Week 5 onwards – 3mg a day

When you reach the maximum daily dose of Saxenda, each pen will last six days, for a total of five pens lasting 30 days.

With that in mind, we did some calculations to see how long each pen would last if you took the same dose every day until your pen was empty.

Can I divide my dose between pens?

You can divide your Liraglutide dose across two Saxenda pens; in fact, you will most likely need to do so during your first month of treatment.

When you achieve a 2.4mg daily dose, your Saxenda pen generally runs out on the fourth day of treatment, but you only have a 1.2mg dose left in your current pen.

In this situation, you can administer 1.2mg from your old Saxenda pen and another 1.2mg from a fresh pen for a total of 2.4mg.

However, we would only advocate doing so if you are confident in your ability to do so or if your prescriber or a member of your healthcare team has advised you to do so.

How many pens will I need for a month of treatment?

The required number of Saxenda pens for a month of treatment varies based on the stage of treatment. Typically, during the initial month (28 days), three pens are needed to accommodate the gradual dose increase. In the second month, an additional four pens are necessary due to a higher dosage. For the subsequent months, the required number of pens usually ranges between four to five, depending on the specific month’s duration. Taking 3mg of Liraglutide per day, a standard monthly treatment would consist of five pens, providing 30 days of treatment.
